Wisconsin BioHealth Tech Hub: Advancing Milwaukee’s Workforce

The Wisconsin BioHealth Tech Hub has been named one of 12 tech hubs to receive Phase 2 funding from the U.S. Department of Commerce's Regional Technology and Innovations Hub program. This $49 million grant is a monumental boost to Wisconsin's biohealth sector, positioning our state as a leader in personalized health and creating thousands of new job opportunities.

Building a Future in BioHealth

The Wisconsin BioHealth Tech Hub focuses on biotechnology and personalized medicine, leveraging the strengths of our local companies and universities. Personalized medicine uses a person's genetic profile to guide medical decisions about the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of diseases. With this funding, we aim to revolutionize healthcare and provide cutting-edge solutions that benefit everyone.

Impact on Milwaukee's Workforce

Employ Milwaukee, along with our consortium partners, is committed to ensuring that Milwaukee’s workforce is at the forefront of this exciting development. Here’s how we’re making it happen:

  • Job Creation: Over the next decade, the Wisconsin BioHealth Tech Hub is projected to create more than 30,000 direct jobs and 111,000 indirect jobs. This initiative will significantly boost our local economy and provide ample opportunities for job seekers in Milwaukee.
  • Training and Development: We are investing in workforce development programs to equip our community with the skills needed to thrive in the biohealth sector. From specialized training in biotechnology to advanced courses in personalized medicine, our programs are designed to prepare you for the jobs of the future.
  • Collaborative Efforts: Our collaboration with leading institutions such as Milwaukee Area Technical College, the University of Wisconsin System, and major industry players like GE HealthCare and Rockwell Automation ensures that we provide the best resources and training to our workforce.

Actualizing Biohealth Career Pathways

As a part of the Actualizing Biohealth Career Pathways Team, led by Madison Area Technical College, Employ Milwaukee will use this funding to support a range of initiatives aimed at fostering career development and growth in the biohealth sector. This initiative focuses on creating a diverse talent pipeline and includes stackable credentials, apprenticeship programs, and new career pathways designed to prepare individuals for success in the biohealth sector.

  • Youth Apprenticeship: Providing hands-on experience and learning opportunities for young people interested in biohealth careers.
  • Summer Youth Employment: Offering summer job placements to help youth gain valuable work experience in the biohealth industry.
  • Scholarships: Awarding scholarships in Biohealth Tech Hub Industry Pathways to support educational pursuits in this growing field.
  • Occupational Skills Training: Delivering advanced manufacturing training to ensure our workforce is equipped with cutting-edge skills.
  • Wraparound Supports: Providing comprehensive support services to help job seekers and workers succeed in their career paths.
